    About

The UVA Summer Language Institute (SLI) is one of the most intensive university-based language programs in the United States, offering accelerated 4- and 8-week courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Spanish on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville. Founded in 1981, SLI allows students to complete the equivalent of up to two full years of university language study in a single summer — a compression of instruction that is rare even among intensive language programs. Students take 4–5 hours of formal instruction daily, plus homework and cultural activities, in a full-immersion environment designed around rapid proficiency acquisition.

For 2026, the 8-week program runs June 15–August 7; 4-week half-programs run June 15–July 11 (first half) or July 13–August 7 (second half). Languages are offered in person except Arabic, which is online synchronous for 2026. Students enroll at the undergraduate level and study alongside UVA students, graduate students, and working professionals. The application deadline is March 27, 2026.

Rising high school juniors and seniors with strong academic records are explicitly eligible and welcome to apply. Admission is generally accessible rather than highly competitive — the program notes that clear motivation and good academic standing are the primary criteria, with denial more likely due to overqualification or lack of space than selectivity. However, families should note two critical constraints: University housing is not available for students under 18, making this a commuter program for most high schoolers, and no financial aid or scholarships are available for visiting students.

Cost for out-of-state students taking the non-credit option is $5,808 for the 8-week program or $2,904 for a 4-week session, plus the $60 Institute Fee and Comprehensive Fee. In-state undergraduate tuition is $484 per credit hour. Students who take courses for credit receive a UVA transcript.

For a motivated high school language learner — particularly one within commuting distance of Charlottesville — SLI offers an unusual opportunity to achieve genuine university-level proficiency gains in a single summer alongside serious adult learners in a rigorous, immersive environment.
