FAQ

About BestSummerPrograms

How are programs selected for inclusion in BestSummerPrograms.com?

We independently review each program we list for academic quality, selectivity, and overall student experience. No program can pay for inclusion in our database. We intentionally provide a mix of introductory, intermediate, and advanced programs in order to best serve the widest possible range of students. Since new programs appear each year (while others change or go on hiatus) we constantly monitor the landscape in order to ensure that our users have access to the most updated information.

What makes your site different from other websites listing summer program information?

BestSummerPrograms is unique in several essential ways.

  • It is the only website of its kind that provides independent and unbiased information about the most selective and popular academic summer programs across the country. This means that we do not exist simply to funnel traffic or convince families to sign up for counseling or tutoring services. In fact, in order to maintain our trust and independence we do not offer or promote any counseling services or application packages anywhere on the site.

  • We do not engage in “pay-to-play” advertising or secretly boost the visibility of programs who pay for placement. In fact we do not solicit or accept fees from programs for inclusion in our directory. If a program already listed wishes to be sponsored on our site or newsletter this status is clearly designated in writing.

  • We offer users a comprehensive set of free tools including our unique badge and filter systems, traffic light system, deadline calendar, shopping cart feature, blog, and many other useful resources. We have collectively put in thousands of hours over many years to ensure that we offer users the most valuable set of tools to sort through the chaotic and confusing landscape of pre-college academic programs. In order to ensure the greatest value for users, we maintain the most comprehensive database of summer program information and data in existence.

  • Most academic summer program directories function as anonymous aggregators trying to climb the SEO rankings via listicles and AI-generated text often pulled directly from other sites. It is impossible to learn who oversees them or how they create and maintain their directories. BestSummerPrograms is fully transparent about its rankings, approach, and methodologies. Its founder, Saul Lelchuk, is a published author, Ivy League professor, and NACAC-certified independent counselor with twenty years of experience in higher education. You can learn more about him here.

Who writes and reviews your program descriptions?

All program descriptions and analysis are personally written and/or reviewed by our founder, Saul Lelchuk, in conjunction with our editorial team. Each listing undergoes internal review for factual accuracy, neutrality, and clarity before publication.

Program Criteria and Verification

What does your University-Affiliated or Third-Party distinction mean?

Programs run directly by a university often offer a distinct set of values to students, especially direct involvement with real-world faculty research projects and corresponding lab access. Often students are often enrolled in credit-bearing summer session courses taught directly by faculty. Sometimes students can join undergraduate or graduate-level research projects and/or co-author papers or submit to science fairs even after the program itself ends.

Third-party programs might feature faculty or graduate student-taught classes, on-campus meals and housing, and other benefits, but they are operated by unaffiliated companies that often run many comparable programs at multiple campuses across the country. Although direct university affiliation is not necessarily superior, the programs in this category often feature the most rigorous and high-quality research experiences to participating students.

How is your information verified? What about the acceptance rates you list for each program?

Each listing is checked against the host institution’s website and official program descriptions. Whenever possible, BestSummerPrograms uses public admissions data directly sourced from the program. If a program does not list admissions data BestSummerPrograms provides estimates based on a number of factors, including information drawn from respected third-party education sites, program FAQ pages, university newspapers and publications, accepted student feedback, and other sourcing. Any program is encouraged to contact BestSummerPrograms directly to provide the most accurate data for its listing on the site.

How do you ensure that programs listed on your site are legitimate and safe?

Every program we include is operated by a recognized university, research institution, or vetted educational organization. We verify each listing through its host institution’s official site, confirm current operational status, and cross-check for consistent contact information, faculty oversight, and institutional backing. We do not list independent or unverifiable programs, and we remove any listings that do not meet our standards for credibility and student safety. We also monitor accepted student feedback in an effort to ensure that the programs we recommend are on par with their marketing descriptions.

What happens if a program is canceled or goes on hiatus?

If a program is paused, significantly changed, or discontinued, we flag the change immediately and update the listing to reflect its current status. Some programs run on alternate-year cycles or temporarily close for restructuring; when this happens, we keep the record visible with a “Currently Inactive” or “Hiatus” note so users remain informed and can check back the following year.

Can I suggest a program for inclusion on BestSummerPrograms.com?

Yes. We welcome suggestions from students, parents, educators, and program directors. To propose a new listing, please contact us through the site’s contact form with the program’s official name, host institution, and website link. We independently review every submission to ensure it meets our academic and operational standards before inclusion and we do not guarantee to list a program based solely on an external request.

Applications and Admissions

When is the best time to apply to these programs?

There is no “best time” to apply because summer program applications differ greatly in both requirements and deadlines. To make matters more confusing, more programs are now offering “Early” or “Rolling” applications in an attempt to lock in participants as early as possible. Students should be mindful that many of the most selective summer programs have extremely early application deadlines—sometimes the fall of the previous calendar year (i.e. Fall 2025 for a Summer 2026 program). Additionally, many popular “Rolling” admissions programs tend to fill up long before their final deadline. Students should also be aware that certain programs require or prefer standardized test scores, adding an additional element of planning for students who might not have taken these tests. The teacher recommendation process can add unforeseen delays to an application. For these reasons we recommend checking a program’s deadlines carefully and planning 3-6+ months ahead.

How do I learn more about how to apply to the most selective academic programs?

For a comprehensive explanation of how to apply to the most selective programs we recommend our comprehensive How to Apply guide.

Can international students apply to these programs or are they only open to US students?

Many of the best US programs accept international applicants. We recommend using our filters to show “Global Access” programs as an easy way to search for this specific information. Our descriptions also indicate if programs require visas such as F-1 or J-1 for international students.

Costs, Housing, and Financial Aid

Do you list tuition costs or financial aid information for each program?

Yes. Whenever possible, we include the most recently verified tuition and housing costs for each program, along with details about financial aid or scholarship opportunities. Since some programs adjust their tuition annually or vary by residential/commuter status, we always recommend checking the host institution’s official page as well. Our database can also be filtered by cost and financial aid availability. Families should note that many of the best programs provide need-based financial aid, and so the listed “sticker price” might be significantly greater than the actual cost to attend.

Do the listed programs include housing, meals, or supervision for students?

The majority of both university-affiliated and third-party-managed programs are fully residential, meaning participants live on campus in supervised dormitories and eat in university dining halls. Others operate in a commuter format or offer both options. Each program listing on our site indicates whether housing and meals are provided, along with any special supervision arrangements for minors. Certain programs do not offer housing or require a local address for eligibility and our website always displays this information.

Which programs offer scholarships or free tuition?

Our “Exceptional Value” badge highlights the rare programs offering tuition-free experiences or research stipends. Filters allow users to sort by affordability and financial aid availability.

Badges, Filters, and Classification

What do your badges mean? How do you decide which programs receive which badges?

The badges created by BestSummerPrograms are one of the most unique and defining aspects of our services. Some of our badges are simple open-and-shut designations: International Access, Regional Access, Underserved demographic-oriented programs, Exceptional Value, etc. The rationales behind other badges (Top 10, Elite Impact, etc.) are more nuanced and include a comprehensive set of factors including a program’s overall reputation and name recognition, direct lab and faculty research access, science fair and publication results, longevity, selectivity, application components, admissions office recognition, admitted student feedback, and other data gathered by BestSummerPrograms. Click here for a detailed description of the different badges we award.

What about your traffic light system (Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced)?

Our “traffic light” system is another unique asset offered by BestSummerPrograms but it should be understood and used as a nuanced measurement to help families make decisions—not as a factual indicator of superiority. For instance, we do not mean to suggest that a program listed as introductory is inferior to an advanced program. On the contrary, for a certain type of student— such as an underclassman seeking basic exposure to a new subject for a shorter duration and less time/financial commitment—an introductory program might be far better suited than an advanced program.

Different academic programs target different types and ages of students with different goals and abilities. It is our intention to provide guidance so that students can find their ways to the programs that best match their goals. It is also common for a student to ‘climb the ladder’ and move from Introductory to Intermediate to Advanced programs as they progress through high school and gain experience and academic focus. Our traffic light system has become one of the most popular features of our website precisely because it does not attempt to force over-simplified, cookie-cutter designations of superiority where such comparisons are not actually possible.

Updates and Editorial Policy

How often are programs updated?

We do everything possible to provide the most accurate data to our users. We refresh all listings seasonally and update key data (deadlines, tuition, dates, changes to applications) as new information becomes available. We also periodically scan all program websites in our database to ensure our information is up to date. If any data listed is incorrect we encourage the program in question to contact us with a correction so we can immediately update our listing to ensure accuracy.

How can programs request corrections or submit updates?

Program directors may contact us directly to provide verified updates. We typically implement corrections within 48 hours.

Do you charge fees for the information you provide?

BestSummerPrograms was created to serve as a free global resource for US and international students searching for a central repository of pre-college academic programs and high school competitions. We do not charge our users any fees for access to the information we provide.
