    About

Writers Week is a one-week day program at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, combining creative writing and theatre workshops for students entering grades 9–12. Sarah Lawrence is among the most respected small liberal arts colleges in the country for its arts and writing programs — its MFA Writing Program has produced a notable roster of literary alumni — and Writers Week is taught by MFA Writing and Theatre Program candidates from the college, giving participants direct access to working graduate-level writers and theatre practitioners rather than general enrichment instructors.

Each day is structured around two parallel tracks: a writing workshop covering cross-genre generative work including fiction, poetry, memoir, speculative fiction, and flash fiction; and a theatre workshop exploring improvisation, character, and performance writing in areas such as screenwriting, comedy sketch writing, playwriting, and musical songwriting. Classes are capped at 18 students with two teaching artists per workshop — a ratio that reflects Sarah Lawrence's institutional commitment to small-group, individualized instruction. The week concludes with faculty and student readings and a celebration of student work. New in 2026, participants earn one transferable college credit upon successful completion.

Writers Week is not selective and does not require prior writing or theatre experience — the program explicitly positions itself as welcoming to beginners and advanced writers alike, in a noncompetitive environment. For students within commuting distance of Bronxville who want a low-stakes, creatively serious introduction to the kind of writing culture Sarah Lawrence embodies, Writers Week offers genuine access to that environment at an accessible price and commitment level.
