The Essentials of Finance program is a two-week residential summer course for high school students offered through the Wharton Global Youth Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Designed for students in grades 9–11 (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors), the program introduces foundational financial concepts drawn from undergraduate business education, including time value of money, interest rates, compounding, discounted cash flow, equity valuation, and basic corporate accounting.
Instruction is delivered through faculty-designed lectures, case discussions, and applied problem sets that require students to engage directly with financial models. Participants work through valuation exercises, risk–return frameworks, and investment tradeoffs, with emphasis on analytical reasoning rather than simulated trading or gamified activities. Coursework includes small-group projects and quantitative exercises that mirror the logic of introductory finance courses, focusing on interpretation of financial data, modeling assumptions, and disciplined decision processes.
Admission is selective and handled through the Wharton Global Youth application system, with applicants evaluated on academic performance—including a recommended minimum 3.3 unweighted GPA—and demonstrated interest in business or economics. International students are eligible to apply, and enrollment is capped by cohort size. The program fee for 2026 is $7,299, with a $100 non-refundable application fee. For the 2026 cycle, the priority application deadline is January 28, 2026, with a final deadline of March 18, 2026. While Wharton Global Youth partners with Summer Discovery for residential and administrative logistics, academic oversight and curriculum design remain under Wharton’s authority. The program does not confer university credit.
The program is residential, with students living in University of Pennsylvania housing and attending daily academic sessions on Wharton’s campus in Philadelphia. For 2026, four sessions are offered: June 7 – June 19, June 21 – July 3, July 12 – July 25, and July 26 – August 8. Students receive a Wharton Global Youth Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course.
Institutionally, Essentials of Finance is part of Wharton Global Youth’s core academic suite, which adapts Wharton undergraduate content for pre-college learners across finance, entrepreneurship, data science, and leadership. Students who complete the program leave with structured familiarity with financial logic, quantitative valuation methods, and analytical frameworks used in business education. Essentials of Finance occupies a mid-tier precollege category: more rigorous than general enrichment camps, but distinct from faculty-embedded research or credit-bearing collegiate programs.
The curriculum for Essentials of Finance is adapted from Wharton’s undergraduate introductory finance content, emphasizing valuation models and analytical reasoning rather than market simulation or trading platforms.
