Launched in 2020, the Wharton Data Science Academy is a three-week, academically intensive summer program designed for high school students interested in data analysis, computational thinking, and the application of quantitative methods to real-world problems. Offered through Wharton Global Youth Programs, the academy introduces students to the core principles of data science—including data wrangling, visualization, statistical reasoning, and introductory machine learning—within a business and decision-making context. Rather than functioning as a survey or coding boot camp, the program emphasizes how data is used to inform strategy, policy, and organizational outcomes, reflecting Wharton’s applied, interdisciplinary approach to quantitative analysis.
Instruction combines conceptual lectures with hands-on work using real datasets, enabling students to move beyond surface-level exposure and engage with the logic and limitations of data-driven inference. The academy is structured to give students an authentic preview of how data science is taught and applied in a university environment, particularly within economics, finance, and organizational analysis.
The academy runs full-time over three weeks on Penn’s campus and is part of Wharton’s broader Global Youth portfolio (a group technically separate from the Arts & Sciences academies). Instruction is delivered by Wharton faculty and affiliated instructors with expertise in analytics, economics, and applied statistics. Students participate in lectures, guided labs, case-based exercises, and collaborative projects that emphasize analytical reasoning and communication.
While Wharton does not publish admissions statistics, it notes that admissions is “selective” and that the program takes about 75 students annually. Applicants should currently be enrolled in grades 10-11 and have a strong background in math and coding and interest in data analytics. Previous understanding of statistics is preferred. Applicants are evaluated holistically and are expected to demonstrate strong academic preparation, quantitative aptitude, and the ability to engage with fast-paced, college-level material—the program specifically notes that the rigor is comparable to an intermediate Wharton undergraduate course. Like other Penn summer academies, the program operates in conjunction with Summer Discovery, which manages housing, student life, and non-academic programming, while Wharton retains responsibility for curriculum and instruction. Residential students live in Penn housing and follow a structured daily academic schedule alongside peers from the U.S. and abroad.
Students leave the Wharton Data Science Academy with a clearer understanding of how data science operates at the intersection of computation, statistics, and decision-making. Participants develop experience working with datasets, interpreting results responsibly, and communicating findings—skills that are foundational across business, economics, public policy, and emerging technology fields. For any students wondering if they should pursue data science in college, this program is one of only a few to offer a serious and comprehensive academic experience during a high school summer.
Wharton was one of the first business schools to integrate data analytics as a core component of undergraduate education, a shift that directly shaped the curriculum of programs like the Data Science Academy.
