The Victory Briefs Institute is the most widely recognized summer debate program in the United States for Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum debate. Operating across multiple university campuses each summer, VBI has built its reputation on a curriculum model that is genuinely distinct from most academic summer programs: intensive one-on-one mentorship, small labs of 8–12 students, hundreds of elective modules spanning philosophy, economics, ethics, and technical debate skills, and open-access Socrates Hours during which any student can work with any instructor on staff. Every student is assigned a personal faculty mentor for daily check-ins, and at least ten to twenty practice rounds with detailed written feedback are built into the schedule. The result is a program that functions less like a lecture series and more like a coaching relationship compressed into two weeks.
VBI alumni have won over 50 national debate championships across the Tournament of Champions, NSDA Nationals, the National Catholic Forensic League, and the National Debate Coaches Association — a record that reflects both the quality of instruction and the self-selection of the applicant pool, which draws from the most competitive debate programs in the country. Faculty are drawn from the top tier of active collegiate and high school coaches, and the staff's deliberate ideological and stylistic diversity means there is no single "VBI style" — students are exposed to traditional and progressive approaches, local and national circuit norms, and a range of philosophical frameworks depending on the modules they select.
The 2026 lineup offers meaningful variation by session. The Accelerator track at UC San Diego (July 13–26) is designed for newer debaters building fundamentals. The Flagship session (July 27–August 9) targets experienced competitors and introduces the fall topics announced August 1. The Four-Week program is a new intensive track for serious competitors seeking extended research and drilling time. For students serious about competitive debate — particularly those competing on the national circuit in LD or PF — VBI is the program coaches most consistently recommend and the one whose alumni network shapes the activity's national competitive culture.
