About

The Veterinary Summer Experience Program (VSEP) at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is a six-week program for Tennessee high school juniors and seniors that operates unlike any other pre-vet offering in this catalog. Rather than bringing students to campus for lectures, VSEP sends them into working veterinary practices — students spend five weeks shadowing veterinarians at an approved local clinic in their own community, logging 40 hours per week in a real clinical environment, before converging on the UT campus in Knoxville for a final week of lectures, lab sessions, and clinical rotations led by college faculty. The program is entirely free, and participants receive a stipend for their time.

The structure matters for what it produces: five weeks of full-time shadowing generates the kind of documented animal experience that veterinary schools actually require, not a few afternoons of observation. Students are responsible for identifying their own practice site — which must be approved by UTCVM — and committing without exception to the full 40-hours-per-week schedule. The program explicitly states that students with conflicting summer plans should not apply. That standard of commitment is itself part of the program's value.

VSEP admits 12 students per year from an applicant pool that has exceeded 150 in recent cycles, placing the effective acceptance rate around 8%. Eligibility is restricted to Tennessee residents enrolled in a Tennessee high school or homeschool program, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The program has been running since 1993.

For a Tennessee student who is serious about veterinary medicine, VSEP is the strongest in-state opportunity available — free, stipended, genuinely selective, and built around the kind of sustained clinical exposure that most pre-vet programs gesture toward without delivering.
