The UT National Institute in Forensics (UTNIF) Individual Events program is a residential summer speech and forensics institute for high school students, hosted on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Though the UTNIF was formally established in 1994, UT's tradition of summer forensics instruction stretches back to 1913, making it one of the longest-running university forensics programs in the country. The IE program is housed in Jester Dormitory at the heart of UT's Austin campus and draws students from across the national speech and debate circuit.
The curriculum covers the full range of competitive speech events: Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking (domestic and international), Impromptu Speaking, and Student Congress, with additional events available to match regional circuit requirements. Daily programming combines event-specific lectures, roundtable topic discussions, news and information analysis, and individual appointments with faculty members and lab assistants. A major-minor option allows students to train in two events for a supplemental fee. Faculty include PhD-level coaches and nationally credentialed competitors with records at AFA, NFA, and NSDA national tournaments. Tuition and 2026 session dates should be confirmed on the primary site, as the program updates its schedule annually; note that in 2026, Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas debate have moved to the Victory Briefs Institute operating on UT's campus.
For a high school student competing in individual speech events who wants intensive coaching from coaches with genuine national-level credentials, in one of the country's most storied forensics environments, UTNIF-IE is one of the strongest dedicated IE summer programs available.
UT Austin's connection to competitive speech and debate predates the modern high school forensics circuit — the University Interscholastic League, which governs academic and speech competition for Texas public schools and is now the largest organization of its kind in the world, grew directly out of the Debating League of Texas High Schools founded at UT in 1913.
