About

The USC School of Cinematic Arts Summer Program offers a six-week, college-level immersion in film, interactive media, and digital production at one of the world’s top cinematic-arts institutions. Participants take accredited USC courses—taught by faculty, industry professionals, and working artists—in subjects such as directing, producing, screenwriting, animation, post-production, game design, and visual storytelling. Students gain access to USC’s professional-grade studios, equipment, editing suites, and collaborative spaces, and live on campus in a fully residential environment that mirrors the pace and expectations of an introductory undergraduate semester.

Admission is selective. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and typically submit a creative sample and personal statement; some courses require portfolios or prerequisites. Although the program does not disclose acceptance rates, small class sizes and the credit-bearing format indicate a competitive admissions process. Tuition and housing costs are substantial, and no financial aid is available to non-USC students.

During the six-week session, students enroll in one or more intensive cinematic-arts courses and spend significant time in studio labs, production environments, writing workshops, game-design classrooms, or animation labs depending on their track. Coursework includes lectures, practical exercises, team productions, script workshops, lab assignments, and industry-guest sessions. Most students produce a portfolio piece—such as a short film, screenplay, animation sequence, or game prototype—supported by instructor feedback and peer critique. The residential format fosters collaboration, with evening and weekend hours often used for editing, shooting, or project development.

Unsurprisingly, the USC SCA Summer Program is one of the best filmmaking programs in the country. Its combination of academic credit, access to professional resources, and immersive training makes it especially valuable for students preparing visual arts portfolios. It offers an exciting introduction to the technical, creative, and collaborative practices central to the cinematic arts, and it does so directly in Los Angeles itself. To aspiring filmmakers, there is likely no greater draw.

Participants may earn transferable USC college credit, use the same production studios and equipment as current undergraduate film students, and often collaborate on screen- or game-projects that are exhibited on campus at the program’s end-of-summer showcasing event.
