The Summer Research Academies (SRA) at the University of California, Santa Barbara provide high-achieving high school students with an immersive introduction to academic research. Participants enroll in a credit-bearing university course and select from specialized tracks spanning STEM, social sciences, and the humanities. Students experience life as part of an active research community, engaging directly with faculty-led inquiry. Residential tuition (including housing and meals) is approximately $7,000–$8,000, and a limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
Students choose from a wide range of interdisciplinary themed research tracks such as neuroscience, data science, quantum physics, environmental studies, and media analysis. After a short online orientation, participants spend four intensive weeks on the UC Santa Barbara campus conducting guided research under UCSB faculty and graduate student mentorship. The curriculum combines lectures, labs, data analysis, peer collaboration, and a final symposium in which students present their findings. Students also attend GRIT Talks, a series of spotlight lectures showcasing cutting-edge UCSB research.
Even five years ago, SRA was moderately selective—in fact, some students rejected from UCSB’s flagship RMP were offered SRA as an alternative. Times have changed; certain SRA tracks now report acceptance rates as low as 5%. Admission is based on academic performance, teacher recommendations, and evidence of intellectual curiosity. Most successful applicants are rising 10th–12th graders with strong records in relevant coursework. SRA is open to both U.S. and international students.
Instruction and research supervision are led by UCSB faculty and graduate students. Mentorship emphasizes critical thinking, academic writing, and methodological rigor. Students receive structured guidance in developing research questions, collecting and interpreting data, and presenting results in accordance with undergraduate academic preferences. Students also earn four units of UC college credit upon completion.
UCSB SRA offers motivated students the chance to explore outside-the-classroom topics in an academically rigorous environment. Similar to programs like UC COSMOS, students should not attend expecting to walk away with science fair-quality research, but attendees report high levels of satisfaction. Given its selectivity, faculty and lab access, and university backing, UCSB SRA is an asset on any college application.
UCSB’s faculty includes multiple Nobel laureates, and its undergraduates often collaborate in the same labs that produced world-recognized discoveries in chemistry, physics, and materials science.”
