    About

SUMaC is Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies’ premier mathematics enrichment program for high school students with exceptional interest in abstract mathematics. It offers both residential and online options, with a curriculum focused on areas such as abstract algebra, number theory, and algebraic topology. The program is deliberately not for credit, preferring to emphasize mathematical thinking and intellectual excitement over rote learning.

SUMaC admits about 40~ students for the residential session and 64~ for online sessions in a given year. Applicants must be in 10th or 11th grade, have strong mastery of algebra and geometry, experience reading or writing proofs, and be prepared for rigorous coursework. Unsurprisingly the unique SuMAC admission exam—a challenging series of proof-based problems—carries significant weight on the application. The program is open to U.S. and international students. There is no published acceptance rate, but “many more qualified applicants than space available” is explicitly stated.

SUMaC runs over multiple sessions: shorter 3-week online tracks and a longer month-residential session. Intended to give true college-level academic rigor, coursework includes lectures, problem sets, group problem solving, and guided research; there is a heavy daily workload outside class hours. The residential version includes evening problem sessions, seminars from Stanford faculty, and peer collaboration. The online version mirrors the content in a compressed schedule.

As a program with a pure math focus, SUMaC is highly respected by students and admissions offices alike.
