Pre-College: Oceanography is a residential program run by the Sea Education Association (SEA) from its campus in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, part of a working scientific community that also includes Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the Marine Biological Laboratory, and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service. The program runs two identical sessions in 2026 — June 22–July 9 and July 13–30 — open to rising juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates who have completed at least one high school science and one math course. SEA's own marketing calls it "three weeks," though the actual span of each session is 18 days (closer to two and a half weeks); worth flagging to a family reading closely.

Weekdays run academic programming until 4:00 p.m. from SEA's Madden Center, combining 40+ hours of lecture, lab, and field sampling in ocean circulation, biogeochemical cycles, seafloor and coastal processes, and marine food webs with visits to WHOI, the Marine Biological Laboratory, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the Woodwell Climate Research Center, where students meet working scientists. The centerpiece is a self-designed original research project, done in small groups: past projects have examined freshwater input effects on Waquoit Bay salinity, tidal fluctuation and dissolved oxygen in salt marshes, and microplastic concentrations in the Gulf of Maine. Students present findings to peers, faculty, and Woods Hole's broader science community — not just a family showcase. Evenings and weekends are spent in supervised shared cottages of up to 12 students, with meals, study hours, movie nights, beach trips, and bike rides along the Shining Sea Bike Path.

The program costs $6,975; need-based financial aid is available but reviewed only after acceptance, on a rolling basis. Applications open in the preceding fall, with two firm deadlines (January 16 and March 2) followed by rolling admission until March 30 or until capacity is reached — SEA is explicit that popular sessions fill before the stated deadlines. Pre-College applicants must complete an interview in addition to the standard application (transcript, one academic reference, short-answer essays), unlike some of SEA's other high school offerings. All accepted students must clear SEA's Essential Eligibility Criteria and medical review.

It is a genuine research program, not a survey course, so it suits a student who already has some science background and wants to design and defend original work; a student wanting a broader, lower-commitment introduction to marine science would be better served by a different program. At $6,975 for roughly two and a half weeks, it's priced at the high end of the pre-college marine/ocean science field, without the residential meal-plan padding that makes some other programs look cheaper. For a student seriously considering oceanography or environmental science as an undergraduate major, this is about as close as a high schooler gets to the actual research culture of a working scientific community — not a simulated version of Woods Hole, but the real one, with real scientists and real facilities.
