The Ross Mathematics Program, founded in 1957 by Arnold Ross, is the oldest and one of the most respected residential math enrichment programs for high school students in the U.S. Based until very recently at Ohio State University, Ross runs six intensive weeks each summer for students with serious interest in theoretical mathematics. Its motto—“Think deeply of simple things”—captures the program’s ethos: depth, proof-writing, and abstraction over speed or contest-style problem solving. Tuition is about $7,000, with need-based financial aid available.
Ross admits about 60–65 students each year, drawn from a competitive international applicant pool. The acceptance rate is not published but is estimated at around 15%; however, this is misleading given that the application (like other top-tier math programs) is rigorous enough to be self-selecting. Admission requires transcripts, recommendations, and essays, but the most important element is the “Ross application problem set,” a collection of challenging proof-based questions designed to test persistence and creativity. The program is open to U.S. and international high school students who are at least 15 years old.
Ross is deliberately structured like a graduate-level mathematics boot camp. Over six weeks, students spend their time working on number theory and abstract algebra problems, guided by faculty and graduate-student mentors. The workload is famously intense: daily lectures, problem sets requiring hours of work, and regular group discussion sessions. Unlike many programs, there are no lab projects or competitions—Ross is about mathematical depth, reasoning, and communication. Students build proof-writing skills that carry over into higher math and theoretical computer science.
Ross alumni frequently go on to study math at elite universities, and have gone on to hold prominent positions in scientific research. Both due to its long history and intensive nature, the Ross program is recognized and respected by top admissions offices, especially those familiar with the small handful of truly elite high school math programs.
Professor Arnold E. Ross founded his math program for high school students in 1957, and its growth was then spurred by the launch of the Sputnik satellite and the subsequent surge of interest in science education. He continued to run it every summer until 2000.
