About

The Pre-College ArtLab at the Kansas City Art Institute is a two-week residential program for high school students offering three transferable college credits, housing, meals, and all supplies for $2,500 — a cost structure that stands out sharply in a field where comparable residential art programs typically run $5,000–$8,000. KCAI is one of the oldest independent art colleges in the United States, founded in 1885, with a faculty of working professional artists and a strong national reputation in fine arts, illustration, and design. PCAL is offered in two identical sessions — Session 1 runs June 14–26, 2026, and Session 2 runs July 19–31, 2026 — and students may attend either.

Each student selects one studio discipline for the full two weeks, with all students also participating in shared art history and life drawing sessions regardless of their chosen track. Session 1 studio options are Animation, Illustration, Interdisciplinary (for spring 2026 graduates only), Painting, and 2D+3D Design. Session 2 studio options are Animation, Ceramics, Illustration, Interdisciplinary, and Painting. The studio descriptions reflect genuine depth: the Animation track focuses on stop-motion and experimental animation processes with access to a collaborative animation studio; Illustration explores character design, concept art, and narrative through text and image with instruction from professional illustrators on faculty; Painting works through historical and contemporary approaches with individual studio space for each student; Ceramics covers both wheel throwing and handbuilding with a progression from functional pottery to sculptural work; 2D+3D Design moves from design drawing through digital illustration and Rhino 3D modeling to hands-on digital fabrication via 3D printing and laser cutting; and the Interdisciplinary track, restricted to spring 2026 graduates, works through KCAI's own first-year Foundation curriculum across all four pillars — drawing, color theory and painting, sculpture, and documentation and moving images.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until programs fill. The March 1 deadline triggers priority studio placement and scholarship consideration. Scholarship pathways are built into the program's design: students who complete PCAL and are later accepted to KCAI's BFA program receive an annual renewable $1,000 scholarship toward their degree; those who complete the Interdisciplinary studio receive a $2,000 annual renewable scholarship instead. Both are stackable with KCAI merit scholarships and FAFSA-based financial aid. The program also offers standalone PCAL Workshops — single drop-in classes with no deadline — for students who want a shorter introduction without the two-week commitment.

PCAL sits in an unusual position in the catalog. The all-in cost of $2,500 for a residential credit-bearing art program at an independent college with a 140-year history is exceptional by any standard — roughly a third of what comparable programs at other institutions charge. The trade-off is institutional name recognition: KCAI is well-regarded in art circles but does not carry the broader cultural recognition of a Juilliard or Ringling. For a student who wants serious studio instruction, real college credits, and a residential experience at an institution where art is the only thing taught, PCAL delivers more per dollar than almost any other art program available.

The Kansas City Art Institute counts among its alumni Walt Disney, who studied there briefly before going on to found the studio that created the modern animation industry — a lineage the Animation studio track at PCAL directly inherits.
