Tisch Summer High School Animation Workshop at New York University Tisch School of the Arts is a four-week, residential program focused on professional animation training. Hosted through Tisch’s Kanbar Institute of Film & Television, the workshop mirrors the undergraduate curriculum, allowing students to earn 6 college credits while learning the principles and creative processes of animated storytelling.
Across the session (July 5 – August 1, 2026), participants engage in intensive studio work covering stop motion, traditional drawing, pixilation, and digital animation. Students utilize industry-standard tools including Dragonframe, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro to produce both individual and collaborative projects. The curriculum balances technical instruction with visual storytelling, culminating in a final screening of student work for faculty and peers.
The Animation Workshop is exclusively open to high school juniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Admission is highly competitive and based on an artistic portfolio, a creative résumé, and a personal statement. For the 2026 cycle, the application deadline was December 1, 2025, with decisions released on January 28, 2026. Accepted students must confirm their spot with a $1,500 deposit by February 20, 2026.
The total cost of attendance for 2026 is approximately $13,170, which includes tuition, housing in Manhattan, a meal plan, and a mandatory $690 animation lab fee. Need-based scholarships are available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Tisch’s Animation Workshop provides a professional-level immersion, equipping students with the techniques and workflows required for advanced media arts study. Unsurprisngly, given the Tisch reputation, this is one of the best programs in the country for a high-schooler eager to pursue animation with serious professional intent.
NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts is one of the few arts schools in the world embedded within a major global research university, and its animation curriculum is housed within the Kanbar Institute of Film & Television—an institutional structure that connects high school students directly to the same academic ecosystem that trains professional filmmakers, animators, and media artists at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
