NYU’s Online High School Screenwriters Workshop is a four-week, for-credit summer course offered through the Tisch School of the Arts. Designed to introduce aspiring young writers to professional screenwriting craft and narrative structure, the program awards participants 4 college credits. From July 6 to July 31, 2026, students study story fundamentals, character development, dialogue, and screenplay formatting while workshopping original scenes and scripts. The curriculum weaves analysis of film and television writing with iterative drafting, helping students build a polished portfolio sample. Instruction is delivered by Tisch faculty and industry practitioners using an asynchronous model on the Smashcut platform, supplemented by live 1-on-1 video meetings and peer group sessions.
Admission requires an online application including a creative résumé, an unofficial transcript demonstrating a minimum 3.0 GPA, and responses to three short essay prompts; no standardized tests or formal writing portfolios are required. For the Summer 2026 session, the Priority Application Deadline is May 11, 2026, and the Regular Deadline is June 10, 2026. Tuition is $8,008, plus a $75 application fee and a $1,500 enrollment deposit. Technical requirements include a computer with a webcam, microphone, and a reliable internet connection using the Chrome browser.
This workshop is grounded in Tisch’s institutional emphasis on narrative arts and professional creative writing. NYU Tisch’s identity as a leading film and dramatic arts school shapes a curriculum that situates creative craft within industry-standard practices, narrative theory, and collaborative revision. The online format extends Tisch’s campus-based strengths to a broader student population. Participants finish with a refined understanding of dramatic structure and character arcs, alongside 4 transferable credits and work samples suitable for college portfolios.
NYU Tisch’s screenwriting lineage includes faculty and alumni who have shaped Hollywood storytelling conventions, and Tisch pioneered integrating professional screenwriting practice into pre-college instruction.
