The National High School Institute (NHSI) Theatre Arts Division at Northwestern University—famously known as the "Cherubs"—is an immersive summer conservatory for high school students. Based on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, the program offers rigorous training through daily studio instruction and collaborative production experience.
The curriculum begins with core morning classes in acting technique and voice & movement. Afternoons are dedicated to track-specific work in Performance, Stage Management & Design/Tech, or Musical Theatre. Students also engage in electives like Shakespeare, directing, and audition prep. The program culminates in a fully mounted production, providing experience in both performance and technical collaboration. (Note: A specialized 7-week Musical Theatre Extension is available for an additional two-week intensive following the core session).
Admission is competitive and open to current high school sophomores and juniors who rank near the top 30% of their class. The 2026 tuition for the 5-week program is $8,000 (or $10,200 for the 7-week extension), which includes room, board, and all activities. The regular application deadline is February 27, 2026, with a $60 application fee. Need-based financial aid is available through the NHSI scholarship process.
NHSI Theatre Arts offers one of the closest approximations of undergraduate conservatory life available to high school students, making it ideal for those seriously considering careers in the performing arts or theatrical production.
NHSI was founded in the 1930s and is the oldest continuously operating university-based residential arts program in the U.S., and its Theatre Arts Division functions as a self-contained conservatory within Northwestern’s School of Communication—an institutional structure that allows high school students to train inside a professional theatre pipeline rather than a generic summer camp.
