The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), presented by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, is one of the most prestigious national youth ensemble experiences for advanced high school instrumentalists ages 16–19. Each summer, roughly 100 of the country’s top musicians are selected through a highly competitive audition process. Accepted members gather for an intensive residency at Purchase College (SUNY) from early July to early August 2026, where they rehearse under the guidance of principal players from America’s leading orchestras.
These rehearsals and collaborative coaching sessions culminate in a performance on the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on July 31, 2026. For the 2026 season, the orchestra will be led by conductor Karina Canellakisand will feature soloist Kirill Gerstein in a performance of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. Following the New York performance, the ensemble will embark on a major European tour, serving as musical ambassadors on some of the world’s most esteemed stages.
NYO-USA is entirely tuition-free for participants; Carnegie Hall covers all costs related to the residency, room, board, and international travel. Admission is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in high school during the 2025–2026 academic year. While the program does not confer academic credit, it serves as a pre-professional orchestral apprenticeship, combining world-class mentorship and global touring with zero cost to the students.
NYO-USA was established in 2012 and has since become a flagship youth ensemble that not only performs at Carnegie Hall but also embarks on international tours — previously visiting destinations such as Asia and South America — providing participants with global performance exposure rarely matched by other U.S. programs.
