About

The mPulse Summer Performing Arts Institutes at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) are a suite of residential summer programs for high school students entering grades 9–12. Hosted on the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor campus, mPulse offers specialized training in disciplines such as Musical Theatre, Dance, Composition, Jazz, Vocal Arts, and various Instrumental Institutes. Programs range from one to three weeks in duration, with 2026 dates spanning from June 21 to August 1. Participants work with world-renowned SMTD faculty to develop technical mastery and artistic expression within a collegiate performance-driven ecosystem.

For the 2026 cycle, priority applications were due February 1, 2026, with a $75 application fee. Tuition for 2026 varies by track: $1,950 for one-week programs, $4,250 for two-week programs, and $5,990 for the three-week Musical Theatre Workshop. These costs include room and board in university residence halls (standard double occupancy). Financial aid is available, including merit-based awards and need-based scholarships for families with an AGI under $125,000. Michigan residents are also eligible for the state-specific Watson Scholarship.

Instruction is led by U-M faculty and guest artists, combining rigorous technical skill development with creative exploration. Depending on the institute, daily life includes masterclasses, private lessons, and elective workshops in areas like creative coding (for Music & Technology) or audition technique. Performance-intensive tracks often require a video audition or portfolio submission during the application process to ensure proper placement.

Residential life provides an immersive "preview" of life as a Michigan student, though it is important to note that dorms are typically not air-conditioned and students must provide their own linens. Every institute culminates in a public showcase, recital, or exhibition at venues like Walgreen Drama Center or Hill Auditorium. Participants finish with refined artistic skills and a professional network of peers and mentors. For musicians and performing arts students, mPulse is a fantastic opportunity to pursue their creative interests at a high level.
