The Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS) program at the University of Michigan — Ann Arbor is a pre-college STEM enrichment experience offered in three sequential two-week sessions each summer: Session 1 (June 21 – July 3), Session 2 (July 5 – July 17), and Session 3 (July 19 – July 31, 2026). Designed for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, MMSS allows students to take one intensive course per session in subjects across mathematics and the sciences—ranging from The Physics of Music and Forensic Physics to Human Anatomy and Graph Theory—taught by University of Michigan faculty.
Courses run Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Tuition for 2026 is $1,300 per session, with an additional $1,000 fee for residential students which covers housing in U-M dorms and all meals. Limited need-based financial aid is available on a first-come, first-served basis. To apply, students submit a transcript, one letter of recommendation, and a personal statement through the MMSS online portal. The application opens in mid-January, and because the program receives twice as many applicants as available spots, early application is critical. Admissions are rolling, and the review process typically takes up to six weeks once all materials are received.
The curriculum emphasizes small classes and close interaction with instructors, utilizing university labs and field settings—such as local "mountains" for astronomy observations or medical school labs for anatomy. While the program does not confer college credit, it provides a substantive academic challenge and an authentic taste of university life. MMSS serves as a rigorous summer academic immersion for students seeking early exposure to college-level STEM research methods.
MMSS students attend classes in the same laboratories and lecture spaces used by University of Michigan undergraduates, placing high school participants directly inside a top-tier public research university.
