About

The Medical Immersion Scholars Academy (MISA) was founded in 2012 in Oakland, California by Dr. Freeman, an Emergency Medicine physician at Highland Hospital. MISA works to expose pre-med and pre-health high school students to hands-on clinical experience that will provide them with a competitive edge as they begin their health career journeys. MISA partners with local health institutions and clinicians in the San Francisco Bay Area to bring this valuable experience to high school students interested in pursuing a career in the health field. MISA simulates the collaborative environment essential to effective healthcare teams, offering participants the chance to work alongside like-minded aspiring health professionals—and to build lasting friendships in the process. Each week, participants earn at least five health-focused certifications, each valid for a minimum of two years. These certifications teach valuable, transferable skills such as effective communication, active listening, and teamwork
