About

Canada/USA Mathcamp is an intensive five-week residential mathematics program for mathematically gifted students who seek an environment built around genuine exploration, advanced problem-solving, and mathematical creativity. Founded in 1993, the program immerses students in a flexible academic structure that includes daily classes, mini-courses, workshops, and mentorship sessions spanning subjects such as combinatorics, topology, number theory, graph theory, real analysis, game theory, cryptography, and discrete mathematics. Classes are taught by mathematicians, graduate students, and visiting faculty, and students live together in a close-knit residential community organized around intellectual curiosity and collaborative inquiry.

Admissions to Mathcamp are competitive. Applicants complete the program’s Qualifying Quiz—a set of open-ended, proof-oriented problems designed to assess creativity, reasoning, and persistence—along with a short application, transcripts, and a recommendation. Students must fall within the age range of 13–18, and successful applicants typically possess deep interest in mathematics and readiness for substantial abstraction. Financial aid is robust; many students attend at reduced or no tuition based on family need, and the program is made up almost equally of returning alumni and new students.

The five-week structure allows students to shape their mathematical pathways. Participants choose from a wide catalogue of daily classes, engage with problem sessions, attend colloquia by visiting mathematicians, and take part in optional interdisciplinary workshops. A defining feature is the program’s culture of self-directed exploration: students may pursue independent projects, propose specialized mini-seminars, or work with instructors on advanced topics beyond the formal curriculum. Community traditions, mathematical games, and informal evening problem-solving sessions round out the academic environment, creating a sustained culture of curiosity and experimentation.

Mathcamp is one of a small handful of mathematics programs that are genuinely gold standard. Many of its participating students rank (or will rank) high in the competitive math world, including Math Olympiad, and many alumni go on to study at universities like MIT, Caltech, and other top STEM schools. Yet equally, participants also value the unique culture of Mathcamp: a quirky and close-knit community that delivers a very real measure of social happiness along with the intense academic challenge. For a certain type of student there is almost no better way to spend a summer.

Did You Know?

Mathcamp is one of the oldest and most selective high-school mathematics programs in North America—and its Qualifying Quiz has become a quietly legendary benchmark for identifying deep mathematical talent. Many professional mathematicians credit Mathcamp as their first exposure to “real mathematics”—the kind found in proof-based university courses—making it a formative training ground for some of the brightest mathematical minds in the world.
