The Longhorns Sports Medicine Camp is a four-day intensive introduction to athletic training and sports medicine for high school students, hosted on the University of Texas campus in Austin and run by UT Athletics' sports medicine staff in conjunction with the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. Now in its 26th year, the camp covers anatomy basics, taping techniques, injury evaluation and treatment for shoulder, knee, and ankle, rehabilitation methods, emergency management, concussion assessment, and application of wraps and splints — the full practical toolkit of an athletic trainer working with high school athletes.
The program offers two curriculum tracks — basic and advanced — allowing students to enter at their experience level and move between tracks as appropriate. Residential and commuter options are both available; residential campers are housed in UT residence halls with meals and 24-hour supervision included. Instruction is delivered one-on-one by UT athletic trainers and clinical faculty, and campers leave with a program manual and taping supplies they can take back to their own high school athletic training rooms. Registration opens December 1 and fills on a first-come-first-served basis — the program consistently sells out, and a waitlist opens when capacity is reached. No scholarships or financial aid are available.
For a student who has already identified athletic training or sports medicine as a serious career interest, the Longhorns Sports Medicine Camp is one of the most practically focused and institutionally grounded short programs in the field — a niche that has very few dedicated pre-college offerings at any level.
