LaunchX is an independent entrepreneurship accelerator for high school students, founded at MIT and now operating across residential and online formats. Its defining characteristic — and the honest reason to choose it over a university pre-college business program — is that it is built around venture creation rather than business education. Students do not study entrepreneurship; they attempt to actually do it. Teams identify a problem, conduct customer discovery, build and iterate a prototype, and pitch a working business model to mentors and investors by the end of the program. The in-person flagship at UC San Diego runs four weeks and is the most immersive track, with residential housing included and a campus environment that supports sustained team collaboration. A two-week Exploration Program can precede the flagship for students who want a six-week progression from customer discovery through full launch.
The program's MIT origin — and its curriculum's stated debt to MIT and Harvard entrepreneurship faculty — gives it a more substantive intellectual foundation than most pre-college business offerings, though LaunchX is now an independent organization and should not be mistaken for a university-administered program. What it does well, it does distinctively: the accelerator model, the emphasis on real traction with real customers, and the deliverables — a validated business model, a functional prototype, and a pitch deck — are concrete outcomes that most business enrichment programs do not produce. Alumni have founded ventures that continued operating after the program ended, which is the clearest signal that the format works for students who come in with genuine founder intent.
The multi-track lineup warrants honest framing for families. The online options range from serious (the five-week Online Flagship) to lighter (the three-week Innovation Program, which involves solving challenges for corporate partners rather than founding an independent company). The Online Startup Experience — open through age 22, eight weeks at 5–10 hours per week — is a part-time experience of a different character than the flagship. Students should select based on intensity and format goals rather than treating all tracks as equivalent. For students who want the full accelerator experience, the San Diego residential flagship is the right choice; for students who want an introduction to entrepreneurship without a four-week residential commitment, the online tracks offer a credible lower-stakes entry point.
LaunchX is the most venture-focused pre-college entrepreneurship program operating at national scale. For students who are seriously exploring founding a company — not studying business as a career path — it belongs on a short list with M&TSI and, for technical entrepreneurship, programs like Wolfram.
