The Institute for Computing in Research is a consortium of researchers, students, and teachers dedicated to the pedagogical aspects of using advanced computing for research and scholarship. The Institute’s mission is to develop the most effective ways to train young students as researchers, applying computational methods across the physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
The core of this initiative is the Summer Research Internship, a four-week program for students finishing 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. For the Summer 2026 cycle (tentatively July 6 – July 31), the Institute operates onsite in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Portland, Oregon; and Austin, Texas.
The program is specifically designed to address a systemic gap in STEM education: the fact that many prestigious research opportunities are often inaccessible to students without existing family or laboratory connections. By recruiting from a broad range of backgrounds, pairing interns with world-class volunteer mentors, and providing a stipend for full-time research, the Institute works to democratize access to high-level scientific inquiry.
Interns are expected to satisfy technical prerequisites well before the session begins, typically through the Institute’s specialized programming workshops. Students leave the program having contributed to real-world research or open-source initiatives, gaining the technical fluency and scholarly habits required for university-level research.
The program treats high school students as junior researchers, requiring them to manage their own projects, set daily goals, and present technical material to peers and mentors.
