The Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Future Scientist Program is an eight-week summer research opportunity for high school juniors interested in biomedical science and cancer research. Hosted on the IU School of Medicine’s downtown Indianapolis campus, the program allows students from Marion County public high schools to work on mentored research projects. Participants gain hands-on experience in laboratory methods, data collection, and scientific analysis under the guidance of university researchers.
For the 2026 cycle, the Future Scientist Program runs from June 8 to July 31, 2026. This is a full-time commitment, structured like a 9-to-5 job, and is a non-credit enrichment experience. Eligibility requires current junior status in a Marion County public high school, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (for stipend eligibility), and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students work in active cancer-related labs, engaging with real research problems and professional practices.
Admission is competitive and based on a holistic review of academic performance, a personal statement, and a letter of recommendation. The application for the 2026 cycle closes on February 28, 2026. As part of the evaluation, applicants may be required to participate in a 15-minute Zoom interview. Participants receive a stipend for their work and are responsible for their own housing and transportation; students under age 16 must obtain appropriate work permits.
Developed to address the shortage of high school graduates entering science careers, the Future Scientist Program creates a pipeline into research and cancer biology. By pairing students with experienced faculty mentors, the program supports the development of critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and independent problem-solving skills in a professional academic environment.
The Future Scientist Program is part of a broader suite of IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center summer initiatives that aim to build a pipeline of next-generation researchers by connecting students directly with faculty labs and active cancer research projects on the Indianapolis campus.
