About

The Hofstra University Summer Science Research Program (HUSSRP) is a four-week, faculty-mentored STEM research experience for high school students, held each July on Hofstra's campus in Hempstead, New York, on Long Island. Now in its fifteenth-plus year, HUSSRP pairs accepted students with Hofstra faculty mentors across a wide range of disciplines — biology, chemistry, psychology, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, public health, and sociology — for full-time, authentic research in an on-campus lab setting. The 2026 program runs July 6 through July 31, concluding with a public poster session in early August where students present their findings to family, teachers, and faculty.

Admission is competitive: students submit an application, teacher recommendation, and statement of research interest, ranking three preferred research areas. All students for whom a faculty match is found are invited to campus for a personal interview before final acceptance. Applicants must have completed at least one year of a laboratory-based high school science course and must be entering 10th or 11th grade. Tuition is $2,250 (payable in installments); the program is commuter-only with no residential housing. Program size has grown substantially — the 2025 cohort exceeded 200 students — making HUSSRP one of the larger university-based high school research programs in the Northeast.

Alumni have gone on to become Regeneron Science Talent Search semifinalists for work conducted during HUSSRP, with at least six semifinalists in recent years drawing directly on their program research. For Long Island and greater New York area students seeking a structured, faculty-embedded research experience before applying to college, HUSSRP is one of the most accessible and well-established options in the region.
