The Explore Engineering Innovation (EEI) program at Johns Hopkins University is a college-level summer course for high school students offered through the Whiting School of Engineering. EEI immerses students in the foundational principles of civil, chemical, electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering, as well as materials science. The program is available in residential, commuter, hybrid, and online formats. For 2026, the in-person sessions at the Homewood campus run from June 29 to July 24.
The curriculum compresses a full semester of first-year engineering material into four intensive weeks. Students engage in project-based activities such as structural design, circuits, and materials testing, requiring approximately 38 hours of coursework per week. In the residential format, students live in Wolman Hall and participate in campus life, while commuters attend daily sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Admission is selective and reviewed on a rolling basis. For the 2026 session, the Early Action deadline is January 30, 2026, with the final application window closing on May 27. Prospective participants must have completed Algebra II, trigonometry, and a year of lab-based chemistry or physics with a grade of A or B.
Institutionally, EEI aligns with JHU’s undergraduate pedagogy, often utilizing the same faculty and research strengths found in the Whiting School. Students who complete the course with a grade of C or better earn three Johns Hopkins University credits. For 2026, total estimated costs range from $4,225 (Online) to approximately $10,190 (Residential).
Within the national landscape, EEI is a rigorous, credit-bearing option for motivated students seeking to bridge the gap between high school science and professional engineering inquiry.
All EEI sections—across in-person, hybrid, and online formats—use the same standardized syllabus and assessments designed by the JHU Whiting School of Engineering.
