The Summer Science Academy at the Emory School of Medicine is an in-person, two-week day program for incoming 9th and 10th-grade students designed to spark early interest in biological sciences, biotechnology, and health careers. Hosted on Emory University’s main Atlanta campus and led by first- and second-year medical students and STEM educators, the academy blends lectures, hands-on lab activities, and career exploration. The curriculum focuses on curiosity-driven exploration in natural science, medical research, and biotechnology, providing a motivating environment for students, particularly those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in STEM.
For 2026, the Academy operates as a commuter-only program from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration is $1,000, which includes all laboratory materials and supplies, and requires a $300 deposit. Students are responsible for their own transportation and must bring a personal lunch each day. Out-of-state students are eligible but must have a local guardian responsible for daily logistics and medical decisions. Space is limited to small cohorts of approximately 20–25 students to ensure meaningful engagement.
Instruction comprises interactive lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and data interpretation exercises. Participants explore biotechnology fundamentals, experimental design, and biological systems while learning about diverse career options in healthcare and research. Mentors guide students through the application of core STEM concepts to real-world problems, fostering confidence in pursuing scientific pathways.
The Summer Science Academy is institutionally rooted in Emory’s commitment to early STEM outreach. By embedding younger learners in a medical school environment, the program cultivates scientific literacy and professional awareness. Participants leave with heightened familiarity with laboratory practices and clearer insight into the medical field.
Emory’s School of Medicine runs these camps through its Office of Multicultural Medical Student Affairs as part of a long-standing pipeline initiative to broaden early access to health careers, linking high school outreach directly to Emory’s academic medical center ecosystem.
