The Cooper Union’s Summer Art Intensive is a selective, four-week pre-college program for high school students pursuing a future in the visual arts. Rather than an open enrollment session, applicants must submit a portfolio of 10-15 recent works and a sketchbook to be evaluated for conceptual and technical readiness. Students choose one specialized studio track—such as Animation, Graphic Design, or Painting—led by Cooper Union faculty and working artists. The curriculum emphasizes intensive studio practice, technical demos, and crit sessions designed to mirror a collegiate art environment. The program is non-credit and commuter-only, meaning students must arrange their own local housing; however, successful participants receive a formal Certificate of Completion. While open to students worldwide, the program maintains a commitment to local talent through specific merit scholarships for NYC public school students. This intensive is ideal for mature students seeking high-level portfolio development and a preview of the rigor found at a top-tier art and design college.
