Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Music at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a conservatory-style summer program for high school students designed to mirror the first weeks of the undergraduate School of Music curriculum. Set on CMU’s campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the program prepares students for the rigors of life as a music major and the requirements of college-level auditions.
The full-time session (June 22 – July 31, 2026) is built around major studio mandates including private studio lessons, music theory, solfège, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and Convocation. Students participate in major ensembles—such as orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, or jazz choir—and may take electives in music technology, recording techniques, or jazz improvisation. In addition to the 6-week session, students may enroll in 3-week blocks: Session A (June 22 – July 11) or Session B (July 13 – July 31). Orientation begins June 20, followed by instrumental placement auditions on June 21.
Eligibility requires students to be at least 16 years old by June 20, 2026, and currently in 10th or 11th grade. Admission is based on a competitive audition recording or portfolio submission appropriate to the chosen major (Instrumental, Vocal, Composition, or Music Technology). For 2026, the Early Application deadline is February 1 and the Final Deadline is March 1. The 6-week residential cost is $11,640, while the commuter cost is $8,319. Full-tuition scholarships are available for 6-week residential students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents demonstrating financial need.
Through this intensive apprenticeship, students build the technical skills and confidence necessary for collegiate success, culminating in a Concert Week (July 27 – 31) and mock conservatory auditions.
CMU’s School of Music is one of the few conservatories in the U.S. embedded inside a top-ranked research university rather than a standalone music school—an institutional structure that allows pre-college students to train in a conservatory environment while being exposed to interdisciplinary fields like music technology, computer science, and cognitive science.
