Carnegie Mellon University’s Computer Science Scholars (CS Scholars) is a four-week, fully funded, residential summer experience for high school students passionate about computing. Hosted on CMU's campus in Pittsburgh, this merit-based program invites rising high school juniors (current 10th graders) to explore computer science through classroom instruction, hands-on projects, and mentorship from world-leading faculty.
The 2026 session runs from June 20 to July 18, 2026. Students live in Carnegie Mellon residence halls, participating in a rigorous curriculum that blends college-level computer science and mathematics with project-based collaboration. Courses and key features include programming with Python, foundational and computational math, research exposure, mentorship opportunities, and a writing workshop focused on the college personal statement. The program culminates in a final symposium where students showcase their applied computing projects. Beyond technical skills, weekly seminars focus on college readiness, financial aid, and social-emotional well-being.
CS Scholars is designed to broaden participation in the field, specifically targeting students who lack access to computer science resources in their home communities or schools. The program is free of charge—covering all tuition, housing, and dining costs. To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, at least 16 years old by the start date, and currently in 10th grade. Applicants should note that due to its intensive nature, CS Scholars does not permit students to participate in any concurrent summer programs.
The application deadline for the 2026 cohort is February 1, 2026, with admission notifications sent on April 15. Students who successfully complete the program and demonstrate continued readiness may be invited to return the following summer as rising seniors for the AI Scholars program. For students with a passion for computer science who lack resources to explore this field outside of the high school classroom, CS Scholars presents a first-class opportunity.
CS Scholars is fully funded as part of Carnegie Mellon’s CS Pathways initiative, a structured effort to expand access to computing education and cultivate diverse future leaders in technology by connecting high school learners directly with CMU faculty, researchers, and industry partners.
