The Stanford CARE Explorers program is a two-week, in-person day program hosted by Stanford's Center for Asian Health Research and Education, focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence, precision health data, and health disparities affecting Asian and Asian American communities. Participants explore health topics disproportionately affecting Asian populations — including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer risk patterns underrepresented in mainstream clinical research — while developing foundational skills in statistical data analysis and AI-assisted interpretation of health datasets. No prior experience in AI, medicine, or data science is required, and the program is open to students of all backgrounds.
The curriculum is structured around lectures from Stanford faculty, clinicians, and researchers working in Asian health and precision medicine, combined with hands-on data analysis exercises and team-based leadership activities. Past speakers have included Stanford faculty directing research initiatives specifically targeting cardiovascular risk in South Asian populations.
The program is grounded in Stanford CARE's research mission — the center describes itself as the only institution among top U.S. universities devoted specifically to advancing the precision health of Asian populations worldwide, a distinction that gives the high school program an unusually focused institutional backdrop. For students drawn to medicine, public health, health equity, or AI applications in healthcare — particularly those with personal or community connections to Asian health issues — the CARE Explorers program offers a substantive two-week introduction to a research area that receives comparatively little attention in standard pre-medical programming.
