The Business Opportunities Summer Session (BOSS) is a two-week, residential business enrichment program for high school students hosted by the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University Park. For 2026, the program runs from June 14 to June 26. BOSS is designed for rising high school seniors with a strong interest in business, providing a first-hand look at undergraduate study through workshops and experiential activities. The curriculum introduces foundational concepts—including management, marketing, and professional communication—while offering exposure to the college admissions process and business career pathways.
To be eligible, applicants must be entering 12th grade (rising seniors). The application process is competitive and requires an online form, a high school transcript (Grade 9 through the most recent period), a 1–2 page personal statement, and standardized achievement test scores (SAT, PSAT, or equivalent). One letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor is also required. The application deadline for the 2026 session is March 20, 2026. Accepted students pay a $350 registration fee, while housing, meals, and activities are fully covered by diversity outreach funds. Financial aid is available to cover the registration fee for students demonstrating financial need. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the University Park campus.
Instruction is delivered by Penn State faculty and professionals from Smeal’s Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs. The schedule features interactive workshops, case discussions, team projects, and company site visits (such as to the EY office).
BOSS is rooted in Smeal’s mission to increase access to business education and diversify the future business community. By situating participants in an authentic university environment, the program fosters academic confidence and provides clear insight into collegiate expectations. Participants finish the session with a stronger understanding of business fundamentals and a professional network of peers and mentors. While the program does not confer academic credit, it serves as a premier introductory immersion into the world of business.
BOSS is run through Smeal’s Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs, one of the longest-standing business-school pipeline initiatives in the U.S., created specifically to widen access to undergraduate business education for historically underrepresented students.
