The BEAT Academy (Biomedical Excellence and Academic Training) at UT Health San Antonio is a one-week biomedical immersion for high school students scheduled for July 13–17, 2026. Hosted at the Lozano Long Campus, the academy exposes students to the front lines of medical and biomedical research, providing them with a roadmap for a successful future in health careers.
The program is capacity-limited to just 20 participants to ensure a high-quality, personalized experience. The final application deadline is June 20, 2026, though students are encouraged to apply early due to the rolling admissions process. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, have completed Biology and Chemistry, and submit an unofficial transcript, a letter of recommendation (ideally from a math or science teacher), and a one-page essay.
The total cost of attendance for 2026 is $1,000, which covers all instruction, lunches, and lab materials. The curriculum bridges the gap between basic science and clinical application through seminars and hands-on activities led by UT Health faculty. Students explore ongoing research in Neurodegeneration, Aging, and Physiology, while also rotating through clinical simulation centers to practice medical skills.
Instruction emphasizes the interaction between medical practitioners and biomedical researchers, offering a holistic view of the healthcare ecosystem. While the program is non-credit, it provides unique access to UT Health’s labs and classrooms, including live anatomy lessons. Local students participate as commuters, as housing is not provided. By the end of the week, students gain a clearer understanding of the diverse pathways available in modern medicine and molecular biology.
BEAT Academy participants receive instruction in UT Health San Antonio’s clinical simulation labs, environments used to train medical and nursing students in real-world patient care scenarios, giving high school students early exposure to professional healthcare education tools.
