About

Tufts University — Adventures in Veterinary Medicine (AVM): High School Program is a two-week summer career exploration experience for students interested in veterinary medicine and animal healthcare. Hosted by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, Massachusetts, AVM provides hands-on exposure to veterinary skills, animal handling, and clinical techniques. Participants practice core skills such as bandaging, suturing, and reading X-rays, and utilize the program’s Simulation Lab for techniques like ultrasound and intubation. Students also interact with teaching animals on the Cummings School farm and participate in medical case challenges.

The program is designed for students currently in 9th–12th grade, with multiple sessions running during the month of July. The daily schedule runs roughly 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is led by Tufts faculty, veterinary students, and professional staff. AVM is a non-credit, commuter-based program; no on-campus housing is provided, and participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodations. Tuition is $1,800 for the summer session, covering daily lunch, lab fees, and supplies.

Admission is selective and requires an online application, school transcripts, and a short essay. Applications open in December and are reviewed on a rolling basis, with decision notifications beginning February 1. Because AVM is a career exploration program rather than a research apprenticeship, its value lies in exposing students to clinical diagnostics and the breadth of professional pathways in veterinary science. Due to its niche nature veterinary medicine is difficult to explore at the high school level, and Tufts AVM offers one of the best opportunities for students curious about this field.
