About

The New York Times STEM Writing Contest invites high school students (ages 14–19) to clearly and creatively explain a complex science, math, engineering, technology, or health concept to a general audience. Participants are encouraged to use the style of the NYT Science Times "Trilobites" column. Your written explanation must not exceed 500 words. The competition requires participants to hook the reader, explain the concept, and articulate why the topic or issue is significant in a larger context. It is an individual writing contest open to US and international students in grades 9–12.

Prizes Offered

Winning essays will be published on the NYT's Learning Network (no financial award)
