About

The National Latin Exam (NLE), sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, is an annual, multiple-choice test offered on eight levels, including Introduction to Latin, Beginning Latin, Intermediate, and Advanced Latin Prose/Poetry. Each exam is 45 minutes long.

The content covers a wide range of Latin topics, including grammar, comprehension, mythology, derivatives, literature, history, and Roman life. The exam is not based on any specific textbook. Registration for the 2026 NLE opens August 25, 2025, with a testing window running from February 23 to March 13, 2026. The cost for the exam is $8.00 per student for schools in the US or Canada, and $10 for others. Top scorers receive gold medals and *summa cum laude* certificates.
