Expert Overview

The MATE ROV Competition, run by MATE as part of the Marine Technology Society, is an international underwater-robotics contest in which student teams operate as start-up companies, building remotely operated vehicles for ocean-science and offshore-industry missions. Regional events feed a World Championship of roughly 80 teams from more than 15 countries across three classes.

About

Teams of at least three students and an adult mentor build a remotely operated vehicle and complete underwater mission tasks, scored on performance plus technical documentation, a marketing display, an engineering presentation, and safety inspections. School teams compete in SCOUT, NAVIGATOR, or RANGER, the experienced class; RANGER teams must enter a regional, and regional winners advance to the World Championship. PIONEER and EXPLORER serve colleges and universities.

The threshold that counts is the World Championship. A high school team reaches it by winning a regional, then competes in RANGER within a field of roughly 80 teams from more than 15 countries, with colleges in separate classes. Regional participation alone is open from elementary school up and is a different credential. The program’s distinctive asset is the paper trail: a participant can show a built vehicle and the documentation and industry presentation behind it.
