The John Locke Institute Essay Competition is an international academic contest challenging high school students (up to age 18) to write essays on a given set of philosophical, political, economic, historical, or theological questions. It aims to encourage students to cultivate skills in independent research, clarity of argument, and analytical reasoning.
The competition is structured around distinct subject categories, with prizes awarded for the best essay in each category, as well as a grand prize for the overall best essay. Winners receive scholarships towards attending John Locke Institute academic programs, with the overall best essay winner receiving a $10,000 scholarship and a Junior Fellowship. Students 14 and under compete for a separate Junior Prize. Essays are judged on knowledge, understanding, structure, and original thought. The competition is free to enter, but registration is required before the submission deadline.
Scholarship worth US$5000 towards the cost of attending any John Locke Institute programme (for winners of a subject category and the Junior category)
Honorary John Locke Institute Junior Fellowship + US$10,000 scholarship to attend one or more summer schools and/or visiting scholars programmes (for the best essay overall candidate)
