The Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) is an international competition held twice annually, each with a distinct focus. The November tournament is shorter, typically featuring challenging, non-standard short-answer problems similar in difficulty to the AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME, and involves a team round with 10 short-answer questions. Teams consist of 4–6 students.
The February tournament is more advanced, with a difficulty level ranging from the mid-AIME to the math olympiad level, and features individual subject tests in Algebra, Geometry, and Combinatorics, and a proof-based team round. Teams for the February tournament are slightly larger (6–8 students). Both tournaments include a Guts Round, a high-intensity, fast-paced team event. Awards are given to the top individuals and teams in various rounds, including the Team Round and Guts Round, with the top 10 teams overall named Sweepstakes winners. Students cannot compete in both tournaments in the same season, and calculators or notes are generally not allowed.
