The Envirothon is a demanding, team-based STEM competition requiring high school students (grades 9-12, age 14-19) to demonstrate their knowledge and practical application of skills across five core areas: Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, and Wildlife. Teams must consist of five students from the same school or organization and must be sponsored and certified by a state/provincial/partner nation representative. Crucially, participation in a prior Envirothon training or program is necessary to compete at the national level.
Judging is comprehensive, combining written scoring with criteria-based evaluation of oral presentations. These presentations require teams to address major natural resources, current environmental problems, and apply data considering political, ecological, economic, social, and cultural issues. First-place winners receive $200 cash and a plaque, along with a $500 scholarship per team member for higher learning. Second and third places also receive cash prizes.
1st place: $200 cash and a plaque
$500 scholarship per team member to any institution of higher learning (must be claimed within 6 years of winning)
2nd place: $150 cash and a plaque
3rd place: $100 cash and a plaque
