Expert Overview
The Blue Ocean Student Entrepreneur Competition is a free, global virtual pitch contest for high school students ages 14–18, open individually or in teams of up to five, built around the Blue Ocean Strategy methodology of creating uncontested market space rather than competing in existing ones. Drawing over 10,000 participants from 163 countries annually, it is the world's largest virtual business pitch competition at the high school level.

Entry requires completing a free online mini-course in Blue Ocean Strategy — under 35 minutes — then recording and submitting a five-minute video pitch proposing an original business concept. No prototype or working product is required; judges evaluate the strategic logic of the idea, not its execution. Pitches are scored by experienced entrepreneurs on value innovation, market potential, commercial viability, technical feasibility, and presentation quality. The competition narrows submissions through multiple rounds — Top 100, Top 25, Top 10 — before announcing winners. A People's Choice Award is determined by a combination of YouTube engagement and judge votes. Cash prizes are awarded to top finishers each cycle, with additional school prizes for the institution with the most top-placing entries.
The Blue Ocean Competition's value is primarily educational. Students learn a globally taught business framework — Blue Ocean Strategy is required reading at over 2,800 universities worldwide — and practice structuring and communicating a business concept under competitive conditions. The low barrier to entry and virtual format make it genuinely accessible. What it is not is a highly selective credential: with over 10,000 annual participants and no research or prior experience required, advancing to the top rounds is meaningful, but the competition itself does not carry the admissions weight of more rigorous business competitions like DECA or the Diamond Challenge.
The Blue Ocean Competition is the right starting point for a student curious about entrepreneurship who wants structured exposure to business strategy thinking and real feedback from professionals — without the significant time commitment that more advanced competitions demand.
