Students pick the contest for their grade, read the novel, and write responses to each prompt; free copies of the novels are available. Anthem and The Fountainhead accept students aged 13 and older in middle and high school; Atlas Shrugged accepts high school through graduate students. Plagiarism, including AI use, means disqualification.

Judges score grasp of the novel's philosophy, critical analysis, clarity, and originality, and the institute says disagreeing with Rand does not count against an entry. Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged seasons award $3,000 first prizes, with a $25,000 annual grand prize; Anthem's top prize is $2,000.
