The American Mathematics Competition 12 (AMC 12) is a challenging 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice examination in high school mathematics. It is designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills, targeting students up to grade 12 and under 19.5 years old.
The competition serves as the first filter in the selection process for the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team. High scores on the AMC 12 qualify students to be invited to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME), which is the subsequent, more difficult round. The exam features advanced high school topics like trigonometry, pre-calculus, and advanced algebra and geometry, requiring significant preparation in high-level math problem-solving.
