Expert Overview
The AMC 10, administered by the Mathematical Association of America, is a 25-question, 75-minute individual mathematics competition open to US and international students in grade 10 and below. It is the standard entry point into competitive mathematics — and the first filter in a pipeline that, for the top 2.5% of scorers, leads to the AIME and ultimately the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The AMC 10 is a 25-question multiple-choice exam covering algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics — excluding trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, which are the territory of the AMC 12. Administered each November in two versions (A and B), it is scored on a 150-point scale: 6 points for correct answers, 1.5 for blank, and 0 for incorrect, a structure that rewards strategic omission over guessing. Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years of age are eligible; registration runs through schools or approved competition managers, not individually.
The AMC 10's real significance lies in what it unlocks. Scoring in the top 2.5% earns an invitation to the AIME — a threshold that admissions officers at universities across the spectrum recognize as a genuine marker of mathematical ability. Below that threshold, participation still carries value as an honest benchmark: scores are comparable across schools and years, and improvement over multiple attempts is itself a signal worth noting on an application.
The AMC 10 is the right starting point for any high school underclassman serious about competitive mathematics — but the score itself is less essential than whether it qualifies a student for the more prestigious AIME, the invitation-only exam that carries genuine weight with any university's admissions office.
